Community

1.Describe your community. You may be a part of many communities: church, school, neighborhood, youth groups, town or social activities. Describe the community that you seem the closest to.
My community is very small in my eyes, and into cooperating itself into everything about anyone. When it comes to my church, they are very helpful and caring for anyone in need. They incorporate themselves in many different organizations that are involved with helping others in need. I am very close to the religious aspect of my community making the church the closest thing for me.

2.What are the shared experiences and events in your community?
My shared experiences and events in my community would have to be the fundraisers we have around town for the little social groups we have around the town. And also the River Festival, and Rodeos that are held around the community to raise money for a lot of different reasons. I have been working at most of these events for years, helping out with whatever I can. At the River Festival we have activities for the children to participate in to either win prices or make crafts, all free of charge, all you have to do is get a button to be part of the four day festival.

3.What common goals do you and the people in the community share?
The goals in my community is to become closer together. I think that is the main goal of everything we take part in is to just make us become more like the community we were meant for.

4.What stories in your community need to be told?
There is a lot of gang violence and just well violence that has been taking over our community for a couple of years now, making the walls come up and seperating us all from becoming one. I think that because of all this, that it has caused a ripple effect has well with our stages of violence making it nerve wrecking to go to a certain part of town. It would be nice if everything could just relax.

5.How might individual, group, and community stories be told through art work?
I think that community stories can be told through art, through either pictures or paint. You can show the anguish that has been caused by the turmoil going around, or it can also show the love and support that is shown throughout the town as well.

6.Is there a sign, symbol, ritual, or story from these questions that could act as a central metaphor?
I think that a sign or symbol for a central metaphor would be light. : through the darkness, a light shines through.:
7.Are there opportunities for you to support and expand upon local craft traditions?
yes, there is actually a art center here in town that has either classes you can take, or you can also bring your own art in and they display it for everyone to see. We also have many art craft stores that allow you to make your own crafts to take home after purchasing the non-finished product.
8.Discuss the idea that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” What aspects of the community
environment do some members of the group find beautiful that others do not?  Can those who find something ugly see it in another way?
I think that many things can be seen as beautiful to one person and not to another. Many of our abandoned buildings around town I find to be beautiful in the antique kind of way. And to others they are nasty old structures that should be torn down. I think that those who find something ugly can see it in another way if they take the time to look in a different perspective. Its all about opening up your mind so that nothing negative can block whats needing to be seen.

9.Who could you partner with for this project?
I am not sure who could partner with me on this project. I think that maybe my finace could help me or possibly a close friend. Definitely someone who is willing to listen and see things from a new side and angle.

10.Where could this event take place or displayed at?
This event could take place here in town somewhere that can be seen by the public.

11.Who would you like to reach in this project?  Who would you like to see this project or be educated about your community?
I would like to reach those who are being so negative towards eachother and show them a side of the community that should be conditioned into the young minds on how to behave towards others.

Does your church have annual spaghetti dinners or bonanzas that the church youth groups or local schools could participate in with art displays to reach out to the community?
Does your church partner with any local charities that have outreach programs for the youth to keep them from joining gangs or help in getting out of gangs? Could you bring troubled youth in to programs where they could use art as an outlet? Could your church incorporate art contest for the troubled youth where they can win prizes or even scholarships’ to encourage them towards a better future?
Perhaps the local police station and school district would be a good partner?
Churches are often the best resource for youth activities that children wouldn’t otherwise have access to or the financial means to join. This often times can keep them off the streets and out of trouble.

  2. When I read your blog entry all I could think about was this little town I grew up in called Meta, Missouri. It’s a dog food plant town but everyone there is such a small community. Church goers, they do this summer-end festival. It’s probably what I’d call the Gilmore Girl town of reality.

I think that your town could be represented by hands holding eachother or church. It’s a tightknit community and it has to feel like home to you to be so connected to it.

It’s not something I understand completely, but I think it’s really kind of sweet. Are you a part of the fundraisers and church, or do you see these people around town? I think it’s interesting when people do act like people on tv and have friends over for tea and stuff, because I don’t think anyone has ever been to my house but family…

But I’ve realized I’m fairly closed off. Anyway, thanks for posting, I enjoyed my firtual escape into your community!
